Billboard Opposition

It has come to my attention that the City of Quincy is considering permitting a 35-foot tall glowing digital billboard to be built on top of the Crown Colony hill. The sign will face the highway traffic, which is fine for Quincy but lousy for Braintree residents who will bask in the glow of the billboard every evening.

Quincy has an ordinance on the books that actually prohibits billboards, but the John Flatley Company is petitioning the Quincy ZBA for a variance to build one anyway. The company’s lawyer has prepared a series of schematics demonstrating lines of sight, but the diagrams only show Quincy. Braintree is cut off the map. Furthermore, even though Braintree residents will bear the brunt of the impact of the billboard, there is no plan for Braintree to be awarded any financial benefit.

Billboard Schematics

These are the schematics produced by the company that wants the permit for the billboard. In no way do they address the impact of the billboard on Braintree. Since the billboards will face Braintree, this fails to adequately represent the real impact of the billboard on us.

Do you know what is on the other side of the highway? The part that is cut off at the bottom of the photo? BRAINTREE. The sign will squarely face Braintree, not Quincy.

The lines of sight are from Quincy, not Braintree. I think it is only fair for Braintree to have a similar photo drawn up showing where the lines of sight would lead in Braintree.

It is worth noting that this picture shows the sign during the day, and the image represents a conventional billboard, not a digital, electronic board lit from within.

Most of Quincy will not see the billboard, because the condos block it.

Another picture taken during the day. Note that the billboard’s profile is not much lower than the condos adjacent to it.

Again, the buildings of the Crown Colony complex block the billboard from view, and it would be the dark side of the billboard anyway.
