Julia Flaherty

Communication. Accessibility. Advocacy.

Meet Julia

Hi, I’m Julia Flaherty, your District 1 Town Councilor.  I’ve been lucky enough to live in Braintree for the last 16 years, and I am proud to be raising my family here. Since January of 2020, I’ve been honored to serve on the Council, and I’m incredibly grateful to the voters who entrusted me to advocate on their behalf. It’s a responsibility I take seriously.

The foundation of my work as a Councilor rests in a strong commitment to communication. To keep residents informed of key events and issues, I publish District 1 News, a monthly newsletter with detailed information on a variety of timely issues. Each newsletter includes a “Contact Me” button, since it’s critically important to me that residents have as many ways as possible to reach out with thoughts and questions. I want to hear from you!

I have been very active in the fight against the Weymouth Compressor Station. As the Council liaison to Fore River Residents Against the Compressor Station (FRRACS), I have worked to increase Braintree’s investment in putting a stop to the outrageous safety and environmental hazards the compressor poses to our community. I was instrumental in bringing to the Mayor’s attention the need for an air quality monitor, and I contributed a motion to intervene to assist FRRACS in the hearings currently underway with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

I am also proud to be one of two Council representatives appointed to Braintree’s Master Plan Steering Committee. The new document will represent our community’s vision for the future, identifying what features of our town we’d like to enhance, what we want to protect, and will set priorities to guide our plan for the future. My pledge to you is that I will work to ensure that the process is as inclusive as possible, so that residents’ voices are reflected in the final Plan.

I view my work on the Town Council as an extension of the work I have always done in Braintree - from the time I was a new mother, I’ve been active in community causes important to me. I served as chairperson of the Braintree Integrated Preschool PTO and on the School Advisory Board, I’ve been a Girl Scout troop leader for 6 years, and I played an active role in the effort to bring full-day kindergarten to Braintree. Today, that program is thriving, and it serves as a regular reminder to me of the power that a group of committed residents can have when they stand up and work together for something they know their children need.

I’m proud of the ways we as a Council have come together to create positive change for the community during a time of unprecedented uncertainty – but more work lies ahead. I’m ready to continue working on your behalf, and I’m eagerly asking for your vote for another term. I look forward to meeting you and hearing your ideas and concerns as we work together to build an even better Braintree.
